I am asked on a fairly regular basis by my players whether they should make a more upright swing with their wedge than a mid iron or a wood.

Now the answer to this question is not as simple as you would think. Your swing with a wedge is more upright than with a wood, BUT this should NOT be because you have made a consciously more upright or flatter swing.

Your wedge is a much shorter club and as such you have to tip more forward from your waist in your set up which makes your spine angle more inclined. It is this more inclined spine angle that creates a more upright swing, you just have to concentrate on pivoting around your spine. As a result, the longer the club you are playing the flatter your swing will be, and the shorter the club, the more upright. Either way your swing angle should always remain relative to the angle of your spine. Just remember it’s your posture that will determine your swing plane.
